Sassy girls, The Soap Girls release ‘Bad Bitch’

bad-bitch1-1300dpismalljpg

Glowing reviews from the usually cynical music press lead some to proclaim The SoapGirls as claimants to other South African mega-stars – Die Antwoord’s throne…  I can fully see this, the girls are raw, gutsy and a little crazy, in a good way.

‘Bad Bitch’ is the epitome of pop punk, it has guitars, a sassy melody and quirky lyrics that you can’t help but sing along to.

It takes me back to my teenage years where I listened to the likes of Avril Lavigne, Blink 182, Sum 41 and other similar bands, but this is the first time in a long time I have heard two girls successfully master the art of pop punk.

The video is just great too, the girls look great and sound great, it is a black and white video with just the colour red highlighted, this works really well and adds to the punk affect. The single ‘Bad Bitch’ was written after the girls suffered an unprovoked attack at a gig in Hastings, where someone threw fake blood over the girls damaging equipment and burning their eyes, it made them stronger than ever though and hasn’t put them off of performing – I have heard some wild things about their performances, such as performing topless, fish eyes and pubic hairs – it all adds to the ‘Punk’ effect…

Although just the mention of fish eyes, seems to make me feel a little queasy, but having said that, I would love to hear ‘Bad Bitch’ performed live.

This year’s headliners are some of the most excellent tribute bands in the scene. Thunderstruck, The ZZtops and Higher on Maiden will be bringing back the days of rock revolution. While there’s certainly a whiff of nostalgia in the air, the festival is also host to some of Europe’s finest new unsigned rock bands. This is a brilliant way to get to listen to potential stars on the rise and the stadium fillers of tomorrow!

Dr. John’s motto is simple – the DJ wants to promote good quality music and says: “the unsigned scene is possibly the most under-listened aspect of rock music. In many cases it is far superior to the mainstream and more honest. Many of them don’t get anywhere near the airplay and exposure they deserve.” That is why he decided to extend his work at the radio and give emerging artists an additional platform to get heard.

Asylums – Joy In A Small Wage Out June 15th (Cool Thing Records)

The Line Of Best Fit –
‘They are a DIY band, but not as you know it. Somewhere between a forceful wave of 90’s pop punk and Britpop, they’re entirely eccentric and entertaining’

Some seaside fuzz for your Tuesday afternoon.  Played (alone) 3 times last week by Steve Lamacq on BBC 6 Music, Southend-On-Sea upstarts Asylums will be releasing their new single ‘Joy In A Small Wage’ on June 15th.  It comes on like Orange Juice gene-spliced with Mudhoney, all pop hooks wrapped in barbed wire and wry social commentary.

It’ll be released via the bands own Cool Thing Records.

Crazy Fenton With New Single – Cool Ella’

Having worked with renowned producer Dave Allen (The Cure, Human League, Chameleons) to arrive at an energetic studio style, the new single ‘Cool Ella’ is set for release on June 22nd. High energy and built on a foundation of distorted guitars and pounding drums, this is one for fans of the classics

20150203_110526

A welcome throwback to the golden ages of punk and rock, Crazy Fenton is the musical brainchild of songwriter Clive Aliker – a Norfolk based artist who is a big fan of making a good old fashioned ruckus. With influences from 60s garage rock and 70s punk all the way through to the modern day, Crazy Fenton is the work of a veteran musician who certainly knows how to rattle out a top tune.

‘Cool Ella’ is one hell of a way to come out fighting, and with the follow up album due a couple of weeks later on July 13th, you will be hearing a lot more of Crazy Fenton in 2015. The album, produced by British EDM trailblazer Alex Banks (EZ Rollers), is the kind of release which will have the music industry on high alert with its raw song writing and production values.

And in ‘Cool Ella’, Crazy Fenton has picked out one hell of an entrance.
